EMT Certificate Emergency medical technicians give immediate care to critically ill or injured people and may move them to hospitals. Two major kinds of emergency medical technicians practice in Hawaii: Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) who are trained in basic life support, and Mobile Intensive Care Technicians (MICTs) and paramedics who are trained in basic and advanced life support. Specific functions performed by both EMTs and MICTs include maintaining the patient's airway and providing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). They also treat shock victims, bandage wounds, aid in childbirth, and treat poison and burn victims. The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) training program at STCC consists of approximately 124 hours of lectures,
field trips, and workshops designed to prepare the student to challenge the Massachusetts
State Board Examination. The program is based on the Department of Transportation
curriculum for Basic Emergency Medical Technician, and is approved by the Massachusetts
Office of Emergency Medical Services. This program gives the student an excellent
foundation in basic life support skills including the use of semi-automatic external
defibrillators, patient assessment, assisting with medications, immobilization techniques,
and safe transportation. Approved for federal VA benefits. Mary Breeding |
