Pre-Requisites and
Other Conditions
to Entering a Health Field
This is not an exhaustive list.
There may be other requirements not
listed here.
Check with the college to which you will apply for a complete list.
CORI
Many colleges now require that a CORI check be performed as a condition
of attending a college program. Health care employers can also require a CORI check as a
condition of employment. CORI or Criminal Offender Record Information is obtained
through the State Criminal History Board (CHSB). There are times when the report
from the CHSB indicates a criminal offense that will prevent a person from continuing in a
college program. It is the responsibility of the student to work with the court
system to make sure the CHSB record is accurate. A college may withdraw from a
clinical affiliation or a health program any student who does not meet CORI standards.
Contact the college to which you apply for details.
Health Requirements
The Commonwealth of Massachusetts requires that certain
immunizations and health standards be met for each and every student attending college.
Each health program may require that ADDITIONAL health standards be met before
entering a program or attending clinical affiliations. An individual clinical affiliation
(ex. a hospital or clinic) may also require that additional health standards be met before
entering their facilities. Students who do not meet each of the health standards may be
withdrawn from a clinical affiliation, the health program and possibly the college.
Contact the college to which you apply for details.
Pre-requisite Courses
Many health programs require that specific courses be
completed before application to the program. As an example only, a health program
may require that Medical Terminology or a certain level of biology course be completed as
pre-requisite to entering the program. Some health programs may also require that
you show evidence that you have carefully explored the field you believe you wish to
enter. That evidence may be in the form of a letter from a clinical site stating
that the student "shadowed" a health professional. Contact the college to
which you will apply for a complete list of pre-requisites.
Placement Testing
Placement testing is common. Most students are required
to take a test that lets the college advisors know if the student is ready to take certain
level courses. Placement tests in reading, math and english are common. If a
student obtains a score less that required on a placement test, that student may be
required to take additional courses or other learning expriences. Check with the
college to which you will apply to find out more about placement testing requirements.
Transcripts
Official high school and college transcripts (if you have attended a college) are required
for application to any health program. Check with the Admissions Office of the
college to which you will apply to get specifics.
SAT / ACT or
other national exams
Some health programs require that applicants score at a certain level on college entrance
exams. Other health programs may "suggest" or recommend SAT, ACT or other
exams be taken. Check with the Admissions Office of the college to which you will
apply to get specifics.
